In last week’s email, we shared stories of local families adopting pets during this time of sheltering in place. Since then, we’ve had adopters come from near and far to bring home love from Sonoma County!

We find it so uplifting to know that, even in an anxious world, the willingness to provide love, stability and comfort for these sweet animals prevails! 💕

Happy Adoption Updates!!

Heidi - Best Friend

Reed is a big boxer lover and after losing his previous dog, he spent several years without a pet. Once the Shelter in Place orders were put into effect he decided it was the perfect time to get a new companion. He started looking online and spotted Heidi, a sweet mellow Boxer mix we had available for adoption.

After talking to one of our adoption counselors and learning about her personality, he made an appointment to drive up from Oakland to meet her for himself. She was a little shy at first, but it didn't take long for Heidi to warm up to him (as our header photo attests)!

Happy trails Heidi!

Sweet Cakes - Senior Love

Sarah had been looking to adopt a new companion after her last dog passed away from cancer, but with the Shelter in Place orders, there were no dogs near her in Silicon Valley to adopt! She expanded her search and landed on the HSSC website. She gave us a call and, after learning about each dog, she decided to meet Sweet Cakes, a senior dog who had some tumors just like her previous dog.

She made the two hour drive to come in and Sweet Cakes really laid on the charm. Sarah wasted no time in finalizing Sweet Cakes' adoption and the two sailed back down south to start their new life together!

Happy trails, Sweetie!!!

Olivia - Purr-fect Ending

Not all of the week's adopters came from far away, some fell in love right here at HSSC!

Fauna, one of our very hard working Animal Care Technicians, gets to know the animals on an intimate basis every day. Shortly before the shelter in place went in to effect, a beautiful cat named Olivia became available for adoption. During her time with us, she'd melted Fauna's heart we knew it was meant to be!

Olivia has settled into her new home and Fauna gave us an update: "Olivia has been a great addition to the family, and my two tabbies are getting to know each other!"

We're so happy that Olivia has such a happy new home!

Pet 'o The Week

Cowboy- Big-Hearted Buckaroo

Welcome to Cowboy's round up!!

It involves running around a yard or a mountain or a beach or just about anywhere with his favorite people. When he's not doing that, he's tossing toys in the air and pouncing on them. Cowboy turns everything into a toy! Cowboy is a busy 3 year-old who is looking for an adopter who embraces the active lifestyle!

This lil' pardner would love some right fine digs where he can hang out with his people for most of the day. After a fun day of play, he'll be more than ready to lasso you into a snooze in the bunkhouse.

News from our Shelter Hospital and Community Vet Clinic

Bailey was referred to us from an emergency clinic in the East Bay after being diagnosed with pyometra, or infected uterus. She was lethargic and hadn't eaten for a few days, her family was very worried. They brought her to an emergency vet who was put in touch with us through Dr. Goh at Fix Our Ferals, another low cost spay/neuter and urgent surgery clinic. They only operate 4 days a week and were not able to get Bailey in for surgery right away, and the emergency vet was worried that Bailey would not make it if she had to wait.

Luckily, because this happened before the shelter in place, we were able to get her in through our Spay & Neuter Clinic for surgery the next day. Dr. Lisa did the surgery while her family waited until she was recovered and ready for discharge.

We feel so fortunate to be a safe haven for many families who otherwise couldn't afford much needed medical care for their animals. We work hard to keep pets with their people and wouldn't be able to do it without the generous donations of our community

Anyone who has ever had a cat go through surgery knows the difficulty of keeping them in an e-collar (recovery cone) post-operatively!

Lilly had a large mammary tumor that was removed by our Community Veterinary Clinic team. Though they are working with limited staff and hours during the COVID-19 pandemic, they are still addressing urgent cases for community pets in need.

Lilly's tumor was at risk of becoming inoperable and metastasizing due to its large size. Post-surgery, her owner was concerned about protecting the incision and keeping her from licking during the recovery period.

Thankfully, a generous donor gave us these "Suitical" cat recovery suits a while back - and we happened to have one that fit Lilly perfectly! It's donations like this that help us care for our community's pets in the best way possible.

HSSC Shelter Medicine and our CVC are still performing life saving procedures and surgeries during the shelter in place. We are so grateful to have such dedicated medical professionals caring for the animals who need it most.

Any gift you can spare right now will do a world of good for our shelter animals and allow our medical and animal care teams to continue saving these precious lives.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

The COVID-19 crisis has affected us all in so many ways. Here at HSSC, we've had to cancel our important Spring fundraising and outreach events. This means that our resources are stretched to the limit. Thankfully, a beloved donor has stepped up with a $15,000 challenge grant to coincide with #GivingTuesdayNow - an online global day of giving and unity organized as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19.

#GivingTuesdayNow is next week but you don't need to wait until Tuesday to join our very special Match Challenge! Each and every donation between now and May 5th will be doubled up to $15,000, thanks to this generous gift!

We hope that you’ll join our compassionate benefactors for this special online event. Your gift will go twice as far to provide ongoing shelter, food and medical care for animals in need – helping us to ensure that homeless animals have uninterrupted care during the coronavirus emergency.

Furry Friends Summer Day Camp

We at HSSC would like to let you know that we are reducing the number of registrations for campers to minimize any risks surrounding Covid-19. Our aim in doing this is to provide peace of mind to parents while continuing to provide a fun and enriching experience to campers. We have also eliminated all off-site field trips to minimize exposure and keep our campers safe.

Registration is still open for our summer camps! For more information and to register, please visit: https://humanesocietysoco.org/youth-programs/humane-education/

Kibbles 'N Bits

Your Pet and Covid-19

We know that many people have questions about the health and well-being of their pets. As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, our veterinary team is staying on top of the latest research and information available from experts in both the human and veterinary medical fields. We've found the following links to be especially helpful:

View the CDC's useful information regarding Covid-19 and animals here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/animals.html

The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine has been updating their site with useful information here (most recent updates toward the bottom of the page): https://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/news/can-your-animals-get-coronavirus

We at HSSC are also actively working on protocols to keep the animals and staff healthy so that we are ready to reopen to the public when it is safe to do so.

Be there for the animals, through thick and thin! ❤️

Become a Humane Partner with your recurring monthly gift. Your automatic monthly Humane Partner sustaining gift changes lives in our shelters all year long – and you only need to set it up once! We’ll keep you updated on the amazing good your generosity is creating for the animals but we won’t send you any other appeals unless you request them.

Itty Bitty Kitten season is upon us!

It's that time again! Each year HSSC takes in hundreds of kittens and places them in foster homes until they are healthy enough and old enough to find their forever homes.

As you can imagine, this requires lots of kitten supplies! This year it will be particularly important to have all the supplies we need to remotely care for these babies! Thank you for helping to provide the essentials that these kittens will need on their journey to adoption!

First and foremost, we want you all to stay safe and healthy. We will be posting updates about our programs and services on our website here and on our Facebook page as things continue to evolve.

Your ongoing support enables us to continue our lifesaving work for the animals during this challenging time.

Together we are providing protection, compassion, love and care. We are so grateful for this connection which inspires so much hope.
