Click here to see a YouTube video of Tormund in action!

Tormund is a big, blue-eyed cutie who was transferred to us in late March from a shelter that was unable to address his medical needs. He had a history of urethral blockages and needed surgery to correct the painful obstruction.

Urethral Obstruction (UO) is a fairly common occurrence in young-to middle-aged male cats that is not only uncomfortable, it can be life-threatening if left untreated. Our amazing shelter veterinary team performed a Perineal Urethrostomy to remove the blockage and prevent future ones from occurring.

Tormund's surgery went well and, once he recovered, we made him available for adoption. We just knew he'd be a popular guy because, as you'll see in the video (below left), he is a VERY sweet and affectionate cat! He wastes no time in quickly making his way onto your lap to be pet.

He's a very large kitty with lots of fine, fluffy fur and we knew he would need some help from his human with grooming and brushing, especially as he is a bit overweight right now.

A special adopter named Carol was up for the challenge! She met Tormund, fell in love (who wouldn't, just LOOK at that face!) and whisked him off to give him a lifetime of love and snuggles.

Your contributions to our Angels Fund go directly to support medical care for animals like Tormund on their journey to forever homes. Thank you for being a crucial part of our lifesaving work!

News from our Shelter Hospital and Community Vet Clinic

Michael is a sweet kitten who was recently transferred into our care with Calici Virus.

Calici causes upper respiratory infections, ulcers on the tongue, lameness and/or generalized illness. It is treated with supportive care and antibiotics if a secondary bacterial infection is present.

If an infected cat has a lot of nasal discharge, we will often treat them with a nebulizer, which creates a moist, damp environment to help loosen up the mucus and help clear out their nose. This can be done at home by putting your cat or kitten in a small bathroom while taking a hot shower to make the room steamy and damp. This helps them breathe more easily and is especially important if they aren’t eating a lot.

Cats rely on their sense of smell when deciding what is worth eating and it can be challenging to eat when you can’t breathe through your nose!

Michael was treated, made available and was adopted in record time (of course he was - look at that sweetie)!! ❤️

Our Community Veterinary Clinic team recently held a small, targeted wellness clinic in Guerneville in conjunction with Dogwood Animal Rescue Project

The clinic provided veterinary care for members of the community who do not have access to transportation and therefore have difficulty obtaining veterinary care for their animals.

Dogwood Outreach Liaison Karen scheduled the appointments and CVC staff provided exams, vaccines, microchips, heartworm tests and preventative, and flea and tick treatment for 18 cats and dogs who attended!

Thank you Dogwood for partnering with us to provide this much-needed service!

As we continue to adapt and respond during these rapidly changing times, HSSC's Shelter Medicine and CVC programs are providing lifesaving procedures and surgeries. We are so grateful to have such dedicated medical professionals caring for the animals who need it most.

Any gift you can spare right now will do a world of good for our shelter animals and allow our medical and animal care teams to continue saving these precious lives.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Volunteer Appreciation Week

A BIG Thank You to Our Incredible Volunteers!

It's Volunteer Appreciation Week and we want to give a huge shout out to our incredible team of dedicated volunteers!

We want to thank you all for not only hanging in there through the pandemic, but for going above and beyond in so many ways.

Even though we could only have a fraction of our usual volunteer numbers at the shelter, you still managed to put in a total of 14,174 volunteer hours! And that doesn't include the additional 11,830 hours for fostering kittens, puppies, cats and dogs who need extra care! And that is nothing to shake a dog bone (or a wand toy) at!

From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU for everything you do: your dedication, your enthusiasm, your ideas; your stories; your smiling faces and most of all for the love and compassion you give to the animals. ❤❤

Healdsburg Happenings

HSSC Celebrates Our Partnership with the City of Healdsburg Fire Department!

We are so happy to be partnering with
City of Healdsburg Fire Department once again for their “Triple F” Furry Face Friend program!

Our resident gentle giant Chonk had a great time gracing them with his Chonk-ness and we think the tongue and behind-the-mask smiles say it all!

We are pleased to report that Chonk was adopted from our Healdsburg shelter shortly after making friends with the firefighters! Thank you to this crew of heroes for helping us spread the word about our adoptables!

How You Can Help

Kitten Season is Coming!

Each year HSSC takes in hundreds of kittens and we care for them until they are healthy enough and old enough to find their forever homes.

As you can imagine, this requires lots of kitten supplies, especially Kitten Milk Replacer (KMR). This year, it will be especially important to have all the supplies we need to support our kitten fosters as they safely and remotely care for these precious babies. Thank you for helping to provide the essentials that these kittens will need on their journey to adoption!

View our Amazon Kitten Registry here.

THANK YOU! ❤❤

Help Us Raise the Roooof!!

Our Santa Rosa Shelter’s roof has protected the animals for many years. We’ve patched and repaired the leaky spots as they’ve cropped up, but the time has come: we need to replace our roof before the next rainy season. We made a promise to love and care for the animals when they have nowhere else to turn. Now, we’re turning to you to help us keep a roof over their heads – literally!

We can do this together!

Our animal-adoring friends at ARS Roofing have pulled out all the stops to get us an amazing "cool roof" with a lifetime guarantee to protect the animals and save us energy.

Now it's our turn to step up and do our part!

Every donation, big or small, brings us closer to our goal. Together we will continue to provide protection and comfort for the animals when they need us most.

❤️Thank you so much for your support! ❤️

Toad Abode! 🐸

Can You Help Our Summer Campers?

Summer Camps are all FULL and coming up quickly!  To support camper activities, we need some specific crafting materials, which you may have laying around, waiting to be recycled - we would love to take them off your hands!

Specifically, we are looking for:

Cat Cave Boxes – About 12x12 but a little bigger or smaller works just fine with a cut out opening that a cat can fit into. The cut out opening is very important as our campers can’t be using sharp tools needed to cut the holes.

Containers/Cans – Coffee cans work well, rinsed and dried, or any container with a top that has an opening (that you would please make/cut) for coins and dollars so our campers can make donation containers! Trader Joe's coffee cans are great!

Magazines and calendars with pictures of animals - for campers to cut up and use for making collages and for decorating donation bins and cat caves.

Small broken (or not) Terra Cotta Pots  – These will be used for ‘Toad Abodes’.

Any donations can be dropped off at our Santa Rosa Shelter at 5345 Hwy 12 West, Tues–Sat 11am–6pm
Sunday 11am–5pm.
