| Kitten Season is HERE! It's that time of year again! In the past couple weeks alone we've taken in over 100 kittens, and the season is just beginning! We're expecting oodles of kittens this year and our dedicated kitten crews - from our intake and shelter medical teams to our foster volunteers - are making sure each and every fluffy baby gets the loving care they need to grow healthy and strong! In addition to our local partners, we are working with other rescue groups including PAWsitively S.A.F.E, Tri-City Animal Shelter and the ASPCA to transfer kittens from overcrowded shelters across California to HSSC. Partnerships like these save so many little lives and we're very proud to be a safe haven for the animals who need us. Each year HSSC takes in hundreds of kittens and we care for them until they are old enough to be spayed/neutered and adopted into loving forever homes. As you can imagine, this requires lots of kitten supplies, especially Kitten Milk Replacer (KMR). This year, it will be especially important to have all the supplies we need to support our kitten fosters as they safely and remotely care for these precious babies. Thank you for helping to provide the essentials that these kittens will need on their journey to adoption! View our Amazon Kitten Registry here. THANK YOU! | | | | | | | | | | | Mae is the newest employee at our Healdsburg shelter. She has been thinking of adopting a second cat for a while but was waiting for the right fit. When Chip came in with a group of new cats, he stood out for his sweet and super outgoing, mellow personality. After working with him a few days Mae decided that he was the best cat ever and the cat she needed in her life! The adoption was quickly made official and Mae and Chip started their happily-ever-after together. | | | | | Pat's husband recently moved into a care facility and she was in need of some companionship. Her son checked out our website and spotted Amy, an adorable senior dog who was also in need of companionship. One look at Amy's photo and Pat wasted no time in making an appointment to meet her. She was instantly enamored by Amy's friendly personality and made the decision to give this sweet gal a home! We wish these two a wonderful life together! | | | | | | | ❤️ Ready to bring home your new fuzzy family member? FeLV is a virus that infects cats and is transmitted through close, intimate contact. Often this occurs between a mother and her kittens but adult cats can spread the disease through grooming and sharing food or water dishes. FeLV infection can lead to anemia and sometimes cancer. Testing for FeLV can lead to confusing results due to the nature of the infection and the constraints of available tests. Although his initial test was positive, a confirmatory test sent to our outside lab came back negative. The recommendation with these discordant results is to retest again in 60 days. He was recently adopted and is now receiving tons of love in his new furever home. 💕 | | | | Little Amy is a friendly chihuahua who was transferred to us from another shelter with a persistent intermittent cough. X-rays were done by our veterinary staff, and she was diagnosed with a collapsing trachea (or windpipe). A normal trachea is composed of a series of u-shaped rings connected by muscle, which helps it hold its shape. As a dog ages, these cartilage rings may lose their rigidity and the u shape flattens out, which causes irritation and coughing. Several small breeds of dogs (chihuahuas included) are prone to developing this condition and there is likely a genetic component. Coughing can be brought on by stress, excitement, and exercise and treatment is often daily medication to help decrease the symptoms. Luckily, Amy is well managed on her daily medication and recently found her new forever family which gives her all the love and care she deserves.
