News from our Shelter Hospital and Community Vet Clinic

Bruce the kitten was barely a week old when he came to us. Kittens this young are so fragile - their immune systems are not very strong yet and they are at risk for developing infections. Such was the case with wee Bruce. He was battling an upper respiratory infection (URI) and needed to spend several weeks receiving lots of TLC with one of our dedicated foster parents.

URIs are common in shelter kitties and require extra care because the congestion affects their sense of smell and makes it difficult for them to eat. Our shelter medicine team worked closely with the Bruce's foster parent to administer medication and to ensure that Bruce was growing and thriving.

Once Bruce was big enough and healthy enough to be neutered, he wasted no time getting scooped up by a loving adopter! We're so grateful for our foster volunteers who work so closely with our team so that even the smallest and most at-risk animals get the help they need!!

Kobe came to us two months ago with both back legs broken after being hit by a car. His owners couldn't afford surgery at the local emergency clinic, so they brought him to the CVC.

Our good friend Dr. Gurevitch, a local veterinary surgeon who has so generously donated his time to HSSC on many cases, reviewed Kobe's case and recommended a special splinting technique to promote healing.

Since then, Kobe has been coming back to see us every week for splint changes under sedation. Last week, x-rays were taken to check on his progress and his legs had healed enough that the splints were no longer needed.

Hurray for Kobe to finally be bandage free! His owners were given instructions for one more month of exercise restriction, and then Kobe will be able to play with his friends again!

While we respond to the fires and the pandemic, HSSC's Shelter Medicine and CVC programs continue to provide life saving procedures and surgeries. We are so grateful to have such dedicated medical professionals caring for the animals who need it most.

Any gift you can spare right now will do a world of good for our shelter animals and allow our medical and animal care teams to continue saving these precious lives.
