Minnie with her halo harness.

Showing off her polka dot dress!

Marvelous Mighty Minnie!

Strutting through our Santa Rosa shelter lobby in her polka dot dress, Minnie soaks up every bit of attention she gets. She responds to our squeals with tail wags, smiles and spins. It’s not just the tiny Min Pin’s spontaneous fashion show that has us smiling… it’s her courage and joy in spite of challenges. It’s the hope we have in our hearts that a compassionate adopter is out there waiting to give her the love she deserves!

Minnie has come a long way since arriving at HSSC as a stray this August. A good Samaritan found the senior dog wandering near a local middle-school. She was blind, very thin and covered in fleas. We welcomed her with a safe cozy bed, fresh water and a nutritious meal. Once she was settled, our shelter medical team assessed her condition. Upon examination, they noted she had a skin mass on her neck and cataracts in both eyes. Bloodwork revealed she was diabetic.

Our veterinary team has been carefully tracking Minnie’s blood glucose levels and adjusting her daily insulin injections accordingly. Simultaneously, they’ve been monitoring her safe weight gain. Now that her condition is becoming manageable, we are ready to place Minnie into a loving home where she can be cared for and treasured.

Minnie’s ideal adopter will need be comfortable with giving her twice daily insulin injections. They’ll also need to provide a safe environment for her, keeping her bed, food and water dishes in consistent locations to help her navigate. Even though she is visually impaired she is fearless (and spring-loaded!), so care should be taken with stairs and furniture. She loves going for walks and does well on a leash, fancy dresses optional

This year, HSSC is celebrating our 90th anniversary as a safe haven for animals. From older animals with chronic medical conditions like Minnie, to fragile newborns and animals at every stage in between… your support of our Angels Fund helps us provide the medical care they need for happy, healthy lives.

We’re so grateful to have you by our side!

A little about our dear Sue Morrill...

Not only is Sue an amazing quilter, she has deep Healdsburg roots. Her mom was born and raised in Windsor/Healdsburg and her dad, in his day, was quite the rabble-rouser at the old Healdsburg High School. He was famous for driving his car up the high school steps and there might have been an occasional race around Fitch Mountain. Sue's cousin, Harlene, still lives in Healdsburg. Sue has been donating quilts, mostly to animal charities, for years. What a beautiful way to support the animals! Thank you so much for thinking of HSSC, Sue!

News From Our Community Veterinary Clinic

Ash on the Road to Recovery.

Ash is a 4-1/2 year old Persian who came in as a referral from a local veterinary clinic. He had a urinary obstruction and had been unblocked, but his owner was unable to afford ongoing hospitalization or life-saving surgery. Her father had passed away the week before and she was distraught at the thought of also losing her beloved companion. Her veterinarian reached out to our Community Veterinary Clinic to see if we could do surgery. They were able to stabilize Ash while keeping costs down, then he was transferred to us for perineal urethrostomy surgery the following day.

This is a perfect example of how our clinic serves as a safety net in the community, working in partnership with other area clinics to get animals the care they need at an affordable cost. Surgery was successful and the last we heard Ash was doing great, urinating in his litterbox, and comforting Mom again. Our CVC staff said, “Ash is a 100% good boy and his owner was extremely grateful that we were able to help.”

News from our Shelter Medicine Team

Roommates with benefits!

Mittens and Squeaker were a pair of cats transferred into our care together.

Squeaker, the white and brown tabby with the squeaky meow, had chronic issues with his left eye. It was enlarged, irregular in shape, and painful, so it was removed. Mittens, the grey and white kitty, was treated for an upper respiratory infection. In spite of all their medical woes, they were extremely sweet cats.

In the shelter we tend to be cautious about housing cats together. They may not always get along and the risk of spreading infection may increase. Sometimes, however, cats really benefit from having a roommate -- it can actually improve their quality of life -- so our medical and behavioral teams work together in making these decisions.

Mittens and squeaker enjoyed being roommates -- having each other around made their short stop here at the shelter seem a little easier.

We are delighted to say these two super cuties have both been adopted and are living it up with their new fur-ever families!

In these changing times, your support helps HSSC's Shelter Medicine and CVC programs provide lifesaving procedures and surgeries for animals in need.

Any gift you can spare right now will do a world of good for our shelter animals and allow our medical and animal care teams to continue saving these precious lives.

❤THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!❤
