Mulligan's Transformation ◾ Adoptable Pets ◾ Happy Animal Tails

Fabulous HSSC Merch! ◾ Gifts That Give Back ◾ And MORE….

A Mulligan for Mulligan – made possible by you!

As the mornings get frostier and the nights get longer, we invite you to snuggle in with your favorite fuzzy family member for a holiday “happy tail” sure to warm your heart! We hope this story of healing brightens your spirit as much as it does ours. After all, YOU made it all possible!

Mulligan walked into our hearts this fall on dirt-caked paws.

Brought to us by a good Samaritan, the shy stray had infected wounds on his mouth and an injured jaw. One of his eyes was severely inflamed, possibly the result of trauma. He was dehydrated and had mysterious blue-purple stains on his right front paw and left back leg. In golf terms, Mulligan means “do-over” and we knew this sweet cat was in desperate need of one.

Our veterinary team quickly got to work administering pain meds, antibiotics and subcutaneous fluids, and offered him soft food to eat and a cushy warm space to help him feel safe. At first, he only nibbled his food. But soon, in spite of how painful his jaw must have been, he began to eat eagerly. And for a shy cat, he discovered just how good gentle ear rubs felt.

Life on the street must have been a scary place for this gentle soul and it was good to see him easing into our love and care. Once he’d had a chance to stabilize and settle in, he was ready for the medical procedures that would help him live a healthy, pain-free life. Over the next few weeks, he received surgery to remove his painfully damaged eye, radiographs and wiring to help stabilize his injured jaw - and later, a dental cleaning and removal of several diseased and fractured teeth.

His surgeries were successful and Mulligan was starting to feel much better. So much so that, during his healing process, he gained a reputation for being a “sweet, silky-soft lover boy”. He especially loved the companionship of our volunteer Cat Care Partners. When he wasn’t engaging them in lively wand toy sessions, he was curled up in their laps soaking up all the love… and giving so much back in return.

Not long after we made him available for adoption, a woman named Haley came across his profile on our website. She was immediately drawn to his one-eyed uniqueness, but a video of him snuggling one of our staff members prompted her to schedule a meeting! Within minutes of walking into Mulligan's room, Hayley knew it was meant to be. While she was completing the adoption paperwork, her mom stopped by to meet her daughter’s new fur-baby and immediately had tears in her eyes - she too was in love with him already!

Mulligan’s days of struggling to survive are now behind him. He is safe and loved. He is home. And we’re so grateful to you for helping us make his happily-ever-after possible.

Thank you and Happy Holidays from all of us at HSSC!

Meet Sheena

Patiently Waiting For Her Forever Home

Sheena, a two-year-old Siberian Husky mix, was brought to another shelter as a stray – then quickly transferred to HSSC. She arrived shut down and trembling, too afraid to eat or even stand up. We could see it in her eyes: somewhere along the way, this beautiful girl’s spirit had been broken. We gave her a cozy space in a quiet office to decompress. For the first few days, she would cower in a corner or lie under a desk for hours without moving. Our medical team started her on anti-anxiety medication to help her feel more comfortable. Soon, she began to trust a small circle of friends. Even though she was still extremely afraid to venture outside her safe space, her shaking subsided and she began to self-entertain with toys. This was so encouraging to see!

Our Behavior and Training team knew Sheena would benefit from the comfort and security of a foster home. They placed her with one of our highly experienced foster volunteers who has been nurturing Sheena, working closely with our Medical and Behavior teams to monitor her slow - yet wonderfully steady - progress. Sheena now approaches her foster mom for treats and petting, and is gradually becoming more confident in interactions with new people and animals! This progress truly fills our hearts! We believe that in a quiet home with loving and patient adults (and an easy-going dog friend who can show her the ropes!), she will continue to blossom into the happy dog she was born to be.

Will you help us spread the word about this special sweetheart? https://humanesocietysoco.org/pets/sheena-the-dog/

Healdsburg Happenings

Good things are worth waiting for!!

Elijah was a long term resident of HSSC Healdsburg. He spent 194 days in our care - and has been a staff favorite every single one of those days!

At 10 years old, Elijah has the peppiness of a puppy and is known for his goofy, playful personality - but his age has been a barrier to adoption. Until recently when Elijah finally found his perfect match!

Enter, Jill and Greg. They had recently lost their senior dog and with a quiet house, they knew it was time to welcome another pet into their heart and home. These two have a soft spot for senior dogs, so when they met Elijah it was complete kismet.

Jill and Greg are looking forward to many hours of watching TV, short walks, snacks and SO much cuddling. We couldn’t be happier for Elijah and his new famliy! ❤

News fom our CVC and Shelter Medicine Teams

Meet our CVC patient, Charlie! He was seen for neck pain and intermittent muscle spasms following a recent bicycle accident. He was started on pain medication and antibiotics, and is feeling much better now!

The HSSC Community Veterinary Clinic provides compassionate veterinary care at cost (or lower) for low-income members of our community who qualify for our services.

Sweet Bettina came to us with some old/chronic injuries. Her sternum had a previous fracture as did her left ankle. Because these injuries occurred in the distant past, they have healed on their own, although abnormally. She's doing well, is able to walk, jump, and play, and all she seems to care about is eating snacks and cuddling!

Being the outgoing and gorgeous girl that she is, it didn't take long before she was scooped up by her forever family! We're so happy we could help Bettina on her journey.

In these challenging times, your support helps HSSC's Shelter Medicine and CVC programs provide lifesaving procedures and surgeries for animals in need.

Any gift you can spare right now will do a world of good for our shelter animals and allow our medical and animal care teams to continue saving these precious lives.

❤ THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT! ❤

Community Partner Spotlight

This year's Wags, Whiskers & WiFi Gala featured on the Hwy 101 digital billboard, courtesy of Veale Outdoor Advertising!

Thank You Veale Outdoor Advertising! ❤

Veale outdoor advertising is a family business with Kirk Veale and Tom Jackson at the helm. In business for over 35 years, they have always focused on supporting nonprofits and their community. They especially love to support organizations like the Humane Society of Sonoma County and have done so for the last 10 years. Veale are definitely dog people and know the value a beloved pet brings into all our lives.

"We feel it is important to be active participants in promoting local community organizations and charities. It helps foster positive energy and growth within the communities that we serve – HSSC achieves that goal. That’s why - when space is available - we donate time on our boards and often promote local fundraisers for major disasters such as the wildfires, Covid, and promote community philanthropic efforts that uplift us all here in Sonoma County.

We want to thank everyone at HSSC and their incredible team for consistently supporting this wonderful cause and helping these otherwise vulnerable animals get what they need to not only survive but thrive!"

Our sincerest thanks go out to Veale for their continuous support and dedication to the animals and our community. YOU are the BEST!

Leave A Legacy of Love  ❤

For those of us who dearly love animals, the most meaningful gift we can offer is one that sustains their compassionate care into the future. Planned gifts to the Humane Society of Sonoma County have the power to do just that.

A bequest to HSSC in your will or trust protects the future of our donor-supported safe haven for animals. Every single gift means the world to animals desperate for hope, safety, comfort and the love of a forever home. Your kindness will live on in each one of their hearts – what a beautiful legacy of love.

As you work with your attorney, estate planner or financial advisor, please consider a charitable contribution to the Humane Society of Sonoma County. Many planned giving options offer significant tax benefits. For more information, please contact plocke@humanesocietysoco.org.

❤ Thank You! ❤
