Tai having a check up!

Thanks to you, tiny Tai and mama Mai have landed on their feet!

In January, a shelter in the Central Valley reached out to us: they were overflowing with animals and they desperately needed our help. In addition to several dogs, we took in mama cat Mai and her newborn kitten Tai. Mai and her kittens had been picked up as strays. Unfortunately, three of her babies had already passed away prior to being transferred to us and her remaining kitten, Tai, was in rough shape. Our shelter medical team addressed the golf ball-sized abscess on Tai’s tiny tummy and treated her with antibiotics and warm compresses. We also treated Mai for congestion and noted that she had several fractured and missing teeth. We then placed mama and baby with Carolyn, one of our dedicated foster volunteers. Carolyn made sure Mai and Tai had a quiet, cozy place to rest and worked closely with our medical team to monitor Tai’s healing.

Mai did a wonderful job feeding Tai and keeping her warm and clean. After a few weeks, she began to lose interest in nursing so we supplemented Tai’s diet with formula. We kept the pair together for a while longer before bringing mama back to the shelter to be spayed and receive some much-needed dental care. She healed very quickly and was adopted shortly after! And, once Tai was big and strong enough, she was spayed and adopted right away too!

Tai is one of the first kittens to arrive at HSSC this year! As we celebrate the unofficial start of Kitten Season 2022, we salute everyone who helps us save these vulnerable, precious, itty bitty beings: our hardworking rescue partners, our skilled and dedicated foster volunteers and YOU!

Your compassionate support ensures that animals like Tai and Mai have a safe place to land! Thank you!

Kittens Are Coming!

Last year HSSC adopted out over 600 kittens!

We are gearing up for even bigger numbers this year and are looking for some help!

There are many ways to assist us with the inevitable influx of tiny, fluffy, adorable kittens:

  • Become a foster parent - from mama cats to bottle babies, unsocialized kittens to entire litters, our foster parents help us keep space in the shelter while providing these kittens with much needed care, socialization and monitoring to ensure their happy healthy futures!
  • Food donations - one of our biggest needs is always KITTEN FOOD! These adorable tiny floofs eat up a surprising amount of food! Donations of any kind can always be dropped off at either of our locations during business hours.
  • Kitten Shower - with Kitten Season comes our annual Kitten Shower!

◽ Keep an eye on our social media for all the details on how to donate!

  • Donate through our Wish Lists - we have an Amazon wish list dedicated to our kittens:

News from our Shelter Medicine Team

Bridget and Bailey enjoying a walk in the sun at our Healdsburg shelter!

Bonded Bullies!

Bridget and Bailey are a bonded pair of English bulldogs who were transferred into HSSC together. Bridget, the younger of the two arrived underweight and with an ear infection, but overall she was relatively healthy. Bailey, on the other hand, was skinny and had several lumps and bumps - mostly cysts and mammary masses.

When screening Bailey for possible malignancies, our medical team noticed something very interesting… Bailey had rocks in her stomach! She was promptly scheduled for surgery to have both rocks and mammary masses removed, and was spayed at the same time. She recovered well and started gaining weight.

These two happy girls melted the hearts of staff and volunteers. We are overjoyed to report that these two sweeties were adopted together last weekend!!!

News From Our Community Vet Clinic

Meet our CVC client Lolita!

This adorable little pup was seen for a dental evaluation after her owner noticed some teeth had fallen out. Lolita has had a history of seizures and was diagnosed with a heart murmur.

Our veterinary staff started her on medication, and Lolita is scheduled to come back in a month for a recheck exam and blood work. If everything looks good she will then be scheduled for a dental!

In these challenging times, your support helps HSSC's Shelter Medicine and CVC programs provide lifesaving procedures and surgeries for animals in need. Any gift you can spare right now will do a world of good for our shelter animals and allow our medical and animal care teams to continue saving these precious lives.
