| |  | | | Support For Overcrowded Shelters ◾ Happy Tails! ◾ Healdsburg's Larry David CVC and Shelter Med Updates ◾ Pawsitively Fun Events ◾And MORE… | | | | | | | |  | Nugget after just 48 hours in foster! | | Nugget was suffering from a bad upper respiratory infection when he was brought to one of our local rescue partners. He was congested and sneezy, and conjunctivitis was making his eyes painful and crusty. Sadly, this condition wasn’t the only hurdle the tiny tabby faced: he was at-risk of being euthanized due to lack of space. One of our staffers picked Nugget up on a Friday night so she could care for him over the weekend. He wasn’t eating on his own, but she was able to syringe feed him and administer antibiotics to start him on the path to healing. Just look at the difference 48 hours can make! We are thrilled to share that Nugget is currently continuing to heal and soak up copious amounts of love with one of our foster volunteers. When he’s healthy and old enough, he’ll come back to HSSC for neuter and adoption into a loving home! | | | | | | This summer, shelters across the country are experiencing a crisis of overcrowding and our area is no different. “In the 5 years I've been working admissions, I haven't seen times as desperate as they feel right now,” says Anna Harrison, HSSC Admissions and Animal Care Manager. “We have dozens of shelter partners, and they are ALL at or beyond capacity. Everyone is stretched so thin.” While our industry continues to navigate challenging times, many shelters are having to make exceedingly heartbreaking decisions about which animals they have the capacity to care for. Here at HSSC, we too are operating at full capacity. “We are leaving only the bare minimum amount of space open for surprise returns, strays, and emergency intakes,” Anna explains. “Other than those few spaces, we are keeping every cage, kennel, and habitat occupied with animals who would otherwise be euthanized due to staffing shortages and lack of shelter space.” Each day, we are responding to urgent pleas from local and regional partners. Not only are we taking in animals in need of intensive medical (like Heartworm positive Bonnie!) or behavioral support (like shy, sensitive Ron Weasley!) and animals with common, more easily managed conditions (like Nugget!) – we’re saving the lives of completely healthy animals who can quickly move straight to our adoption floor and into homes (like Elsa!). Our partners are grateful, the animals are grateful (just look at Ron Weasley’s smile!), and so are we. You are helping us turn a summer of uncertainty into a summer of love. Lost pets are typically found less than 1 mile from home! If you are safely able to keep the pet with you until an owner is found, you can help local shelters save space for other animals in need: Post photos on Nextdoor & Lost/Found Facebook groups. Walk them around the neighborhood and ask neighbors if they know who the animal belongs to. File a “found pet” report with your local shelter. Take them to a nearby vet and have them scanned for a microchip. There are so many ways to help! Gibbs came to HSSC as a transfer from one of our partner shelters in the City of Stockton. When he first arrived we were all getting whiplash from turning our heads too quickly watching this adorable boy walk down the hallways! He is impossibly cute with his small fluffy legs, silky hair and adorable smile; you want to go right up and pet him! But Gibbs doesn’t want you to pet him. He’d prefer you admire from afar. He’s a cautious dog and not a fan of invasive handling or new people who move too fast. Gibbs prefers a small, tight knit crew. A dog that cute usually doesn’t last long at any animal shelter, but we knew his cautious nature would make it a little bit harder to find the right adopter. Natalie and Connor fell in love the moment they met little Gibbs. They spent time with a slow and steady approach when first getting to know him, and that was enough for Gibbs to fall in love right back! Almost 4 months to the day that this cutie walked through our doors – he was walking out with his new loving family! Natalie has been kind enough to send us a few updates about Gibbs, now named Peanut (how cute!), and this is her most recent email: “Our little Peanut is such a big love bug, we are all very happy together! The 16th marks our third month with him! He is such a happy little sun beam and brightens up our day. He has also been attending the Humane Society’s training class on Sundays and he’s been a very good boy.” We are so happy to make such a loving connection for Peanut, Natalie and Connor! | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Larry David is Pretty, Pretty, Pretty, Cute! Just like his namesake, little Larry David will have you laughing for hours. This sweet kitten is a hoot - he loves to climb on his favorite people so he can be absolutely in-your-face! He has tons of energy and will entertain you with his wand-toy acrobatics! Larry was brought to HSSC from a partner shelter in Yolo County. He was found as a stray with an upper respiratory infection and upon his intake exam they discovered that Larry is FELV+ (Feline Leukemia positive). We wanted to give this cute kitten his best shot at finding a loving home, so we arranged a direct transfer to our cat-tastic Healdsburg shelter! Throughout the height of kitten season, this incredibly sweet boy has been sadly overlooked. He needs a special adopter who keeps him indoors only and he'll need to be be either the only cat in the home, or live with other FELV+ kitties. We've received a grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization to support our lifesaving work for senior dogs. The #GreyMuzzleGrant will allow us to help senior dogs like Candy (pictured above with CVC RVT Anna Hill), who come to our Community Veterinary Clinic in urgent need of dental care. Many of the senior dogs we see have advanced stages of dental disease, which makes it painful for them to eat and impacts their overall health. Once treated, their quality of life can improve almost immediately. Together with Grey Muzzle, we're leading the way to save and improve the lives of senior dogs nationwide. Bob the kitten truly had a glow up while at HSSC! This handsome kitten was transferred into our care from a partner shelter in Solano County. He had ringworm and an upper respiratory infection. For his treatment, he needed to be isolated with the other ringworm positive kittens from his transfer to avoid spreading the fungus to other animals. After 6 weeks of lime sulfur baths, and medications to heal his URI & ringworm, this sweet boy was finally cleared, healed and ready to go home! He was adopted in the blink of an eye and we are very happy for Bob and his new family! Our ringworm program saves lives and is supported through our Angel's Fund. Any contribution, big or small, helps us care for animals like Bob who need medical help on their path to adoption.
