Just like humans, we know that all dogs are not created equal. Some dogs adjust to shelter life a lot easier than others and, while HSSC goes above and beyond to create days filled with activities and engagement to help make a dog's stay with us as amazing as it can be... they are still in a shelter. The vast majority of dogs do just fine in our care, but there are some dogs who have a very difficult time with the noises and activities of the shelter environment.

Mattie, a young hardworking German Shepherd was that kind of dog. Our Canine Behavior team could clearly see there was “something” about this dog that required a special strategy to help her to succeed. Our alternative placement team went to work and reached out to rescues and other organizations which could provide different housing with more space and a team dedicated to her care. Azaya Animal Sanctuary west of Petaluma stepped up.

Mattie went to live in the country where her days were filled with walks, learning and dedicated help. She thrived. When the shelter in place started, rather than return Mattie to HSSC, our volunteer Wayne Smith, who had been working with Mattie at Azaya, requested Mattie come live with him while she waited for her forever home.

Wayne Smith is part of our Adoption Ambassador program, which allows foster parents the ability to orchestrate the adoptions of the animals in their care.

Back at HSSC, we received tons of interest in Mattie but were waiting to find just the right fit for this hard-working girl. After several months, in came Charlie. Charlie had spent his career in law enforcement and had experience training and working with the department's K9 officers. One of our adoption counselors spent a lot of time going over Mattie's needs with him and it was quickly apparent that, with his experience, Charlie was not fazed. Our counselor put him in touch with Wayne, who introduced Charlie and Mattie to make sure that they were truly a good fit. After sleeping on it for a night, Charlie decided to take the plunge and make Mattie his new pal!

There is no one single pathway to finding an animal a home. It takes teamwork, creativity and a willingness to do what is in the best interests of the animal to make adoptions happen, and we're so happy we could do that for Mattie!

Mattie and her new person, Charlie.

Pet 'o the Week

Georgina - Sweet and Affectionate 💕

Georgina might be 13 years old, but she has more energy than you could ever imagine! While she prefers a more gentle touch for full-body pets, she'll graciously accept face scritches and never seems to get enough. She loves being around people at meal times, and any other time for that matter! She always enjoys settling in for a snuggle with her favorite stuffed animal toy too.

If you're looking for a cat who will ADORE you, Georgina is your gal. You can't help but smile when you're hanging out with her. Pretty soon you'll find yourself returning her level of adoration, plus a little extra!

Georgina is currently residing at our Santa Rosa shelter, give us a call at 707.542.0882 to see if Georgina would be a good fit for your family!

News from our Community Vet Clinic

Sissy was brought to our Community Veterinary Clinic to evaluate a growth on her paw that had tripled in size in less than a week. It was starting to bleed and it was so painful that she was unable to bear weight on the foot. Like many others in our community, Sissy's family has lost much of their income due to the Shelter-in-Place order and could not afford to take her to their regular veterinarian.

We were able to get Sissy in to evaluate her foot and determined that the growth was cancerous. It was removed the following week. Here she is recovering from surgery and resting with her Mom after she got home that night!

We recently received an update from Sissy's mom saying "Sissy is doing really good. She's walking around by herself everywhere. Thank you guys for taking such good care of her. We appreciate it so much!" ❤️

HSSC Shelter Medicine and our CVC are still performing life saving procedures and surgeries during the shelter in place. We are so grateful to have such dedicated medical professionals caring for the animals who need it most.

Any gift you can spare right now will do a world of good for our shelter animals and allow our medical and animal care teams to continue saving these precious lives.

Furry Friends Summer Day Camp

We at HSSC would like to let you know that we are reducing the number of registrations for campers to minimize any risks surrounding Covid-19. Our aim in doing this is to provide peace of mind to parents while continuing to provide a fun and enriching experience to campers. We have also eliminated all off-site field trips to minimize exposure and keep our campers safe.

Registration is still open for our summer camps! For more information and to register, please visit: https://humanesocietysoco.org/youth-programs/humane-education/

Kibbles 'N Bits

Your Pet and Covid-19

We know that many people have questions about the health and well-being of their pets. As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, our veterinary team is staying on top of the latest research and information available from experts in both the human and veterinary medical fields. We've found the following links to be especially helpful:

View the CDC's useful information regarding Covid-19 and animals here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/animals.html

The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine has been updating their site with useful information here (most recent updates toward the bottom of the page): https://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/news/can-your-animals-get-coronavirus

We at HSSC are also actively developing and implementing  protocols to ensure the safety of animals, staff and guests as we follow government guidelines for phased re-opening.

There are so many ways to help the animals. ❤️

We receive lots of questions about estate planning - including HSSC in your will or trust is a wonderful way to ensure our lifesaving work continues into the future.
